And the School Year is Off!

I am so please with how well everyone has transitioned into the junior high! Yes, we had our normal bad days; lockers didn't open, late to class, forgot what period it was and got lost in the hallways. However, overall all the kids did a great job settling in and adapting to their new environment.

As I have gotten to know the students, excitement has grown. This is a great class of kids. I have seen some very polite and caring behaviors. What a great start!! I think this positive attitude towards one another reinforces our "I've Got Your Back" campaign. If you haven't noticed, teachers in the building on late start days are wearing the "I've Got Your Back" T-shirts. These shirts are to reinforce our sense of community and anti-bullying message. We are saying that, "We are here to help!"

Please let us know if you feel that your student is being bullied. We want all students to feel good about coming to school!

Mix It Up!

Mix It Up! is a national campaign to improve intergroup relations, reduce prejudice and build inclusive learning communities. Students thrive-socially and academically- in school that are inclusive. Mix It Up encourages students to identify, question and cross social boundaries that separate them from other students. This year, Mix It Up at lunch day is Tuesday, November 9th. Due to ITBS testing, we will be participating in Mix It Up on Monday, November 8th.
Students identify the cafeteria as the place where divisions are most clearly drawn. The day is a simple call to action, asking students to move out of their comfort zones and connect with someone new over lunch.
Encourage you student to talk to those around them during lunch this day. This is a learning and social life skill opportunity.

Washington DC

This spring, your student will have an opportunity to participate in a trip To Washington, D.C. The dates for the trip are from March 11-13, 2011. Students will have the opportunity to experience the nation's capital, a virtual "living classroom", with fellow classmates and teachers. The tour is through Educational Tours, Inc., and the teachers of the junior high. The cost of the trip is $980.00 per person. If you would like additional information, please contact Jay Nelson or Tim Riley, the coordinators of this trip.
This will be my second time on trip! I can tell you, from my experience, what a great trip this is! There are so many historic sites and guides provide a wealth of information. The trip is truly educational, while there are times for fun too. I have included some of the pictures I took from the last trip. I hope you will consider this fun, exciting and educational trip for your student.

Blades for Grades and All Star Attendance

Two representative from the Quad City Mallards visited us on Thursday, October 28th. The hockey players were here to promote their academic programs stressing the importance of attendance and academics. The two programs are called All-Star Attendance and Blades for Grades.
All-Star Attendance: ALL students achieving exceptional attendance levels throughout the 2nd quarter will receive two Mallards tickets for an All-Star Attendance Night at a Mallards home game! Students qualify for this program by missing one or zero days. The All-Star Attendance Nights will be on February 4th when the Mallards play Bloomington Prairie Thunder and March 12th when the Mallards play Mississippi River Kings.
Blades for Grades: ALL students earning the "A" honor roll in the 2nd quarter will receive two Mallards tickets for Blades for Grades Night. The Blades for Grades Night will be on January 21st, when the Mallards play Colorado Eagles or on March 17 when the Mallards will play Wichita Thunder.
